A Chronicle of Charlois is a visual essay exploring the possibilities of film in social-spatial research. The title refers directly to the film Chronique d’un été (Chronicle of a Summer, 1961) by Jean Rouch which is an important film that set a new genre at that time: Cinéma vérité or cinema of truth. Cinéma vérité is a style of documentary film that is applied in social and anthropological studies.

A Chronicle of Charlois combines footage of Chronique d’un été with footage of the neighbourhood Charlois (Rotterdam, NL). It places social topics dealt with in Chronique d’un été into current society and tries to find out what it is that we all have in common and what socially connects us.

De titel refereert direct aan de film Chronique d’un été (1961) van Jean Rouch, een film die een nieuw filmgenre introduceerde: Cinéma vérité. Cinéma vérité is een genre documentaire film dat zijn oorsprong vindt in sociologisch en antropologisch onderzoek (ook wel visuele antropologie genoemd).
